Pontefract Collieries ended a tough run of defeats with a hard-fought 1-1 draw away at playoff contenders North Ferriby. In front of a lively crowd of 617, Jimmy Williams’ men showed resilience and quality, boosted by the return of key players from injury.
The early exchanges saw the hosts trying to build from the back, while Ponte pressed high, forcing mistakes. Jack Boyle and Louie Chorlton combined well for two early chances, with Chorlton firing wide and Boyle unable to find the far corner from the edge of the box.
North Ferriby looked dangerous on set pieces and came close to opening the scoring when a header hit the bar. However, it was Ponte who took the lead just after the half-hour mark. Boyle harassed the Ferriby No. 4 into a mistake, stole the ball, and surged into the box. After skipping past the last defender, he slotted home confidently to make it 0-1.
The Colls started the second half brightly but couldn’t double their advantage, a missed opportunity that proved costly. North Ferriby were awarded a contentious penalty after their forward appeared to go down easily in the box. Despite protests, Josh Whiteley converted from the spot to level the game.
The hosts gained momentum after the equaliser, but Pontefract’s defence held firm, limiting them to half-chances. Williams made attacking changes, introducing Bailey Thompson and Jack Wilson, both of whom had opportunities to restore the lead. Wilson forced a smart save and later dragged a shot wide, while Kieron Ceesay caused problems on the left, setting up a late chance for Thompson, whose effort found the side netting in added time.
While the Colls couldn’t secure the win, the performance marked a positive step forward. With the losing streak ended and a strong display against playoff opposition, the team can look ahead with confidence to next Saturday’s clash with Stocksbridge Park Steels at The Hunters Stadium.
Player of the Match: Jack Greenhough – The skipper delivered a commanding performance, making a number of crucial challenges both in the air and on the deck. His composure and leadership were key to a strong defensive display that limited North Ferriby’s attacking threats.
