Carlton Town score in added time to sink Ponte Colls on our league opener, having taken the lead in the first half but failed to land a punch in the second.
Pontefract started brightest attacking the Skinner Lane End and created a couple of early openings, the first saw a goal ruled out for offside – after looking back at the footage Joe Lumsden was just offside – to keep the score at 0-0.
It wasn’t long however until The Colls did break the deadlock. A corner from the right wasn’t properly cleared and when the keeper couldn’t hold a Jack Steers volley, Callum Nicell pounced to slam home his first for Ponte.
More chances came and went as the hosts continued to apply pressure on the Carlton goal, without having too much to do the other way.
But with ten minutes of the half to play Carlton took a quick free kick on the right, a deep cross was missed by Greenhough and Manneh cut back inside and saw his shot deflected into the far corner, 1-1.
It proved to be one of those afternoons for the Collieries, as Carlton were much the better in the second half.
They were able to produce openings of their own and were much tighter at the back, as Craig Rouse’s men struggled to string quality attacks together.
With time running out and both sides heading for a draw, it was Carlton that scored a winner with a minute to go. A corner from the right was recycled twice, before Flatters in the Pontefract goal dropped a cross under pressure and Niall Davie tapped in – to spark celebrations amongst the away dugout.
The hosts had one last chance to snatch a point but a set piece that dropped to Smith on the edge of the box flew over. Final whistle Carlton Town victorious 1-2.
Next for Ponte sees us travel to Consett (Tuesday 15th).
