Ponte Colls found their stride tonight, beating fellow West Yorkshire side in a convincing win.
As the evening approached, the wind and rain lashed our Beechnut Lane home. But despite the weather the pitch was still in good condition and the heavy rain would provide a slick surface for both teams.
Colls in all blue got us under way playing from right to left, ‘Shed End’ to Skinner Lane end. It was your hosts who got off to the faster start. Mikey Dunn latched onto a through ball, narrowly beating the Wakefield ‘keeper to it. Dunn was caught and a penalty given. Redford fired straight down the middle to give Ponte the lead.
Both sides looked keen to play good flowing football, but it was Ponte dominating possession early on. We doubled our lead inside 15 minutes, a second penalty but this time Redford chopped down in the box. He bounced to his feet to cooly slot home his second goal and his fourth in two games.
Wakefield’s first real chance of the half came just short of the half hour. They attacked down their right hand side, the cross floated deep to the back post. Unfortunately for them, the cut back evaded their forward and Ponte managed to clear.
Eli Hey grabbed Ponte’s third. After two sliced efforts from the edge of the area, the last one deflected into the path of Hey who placed home with the ‘keeper stranded. Three nil to the hosts with just over ten minutes of the half remaining.
There was no rest bite for Wakefield, as it was soon four. Redford almost with a hatrick as his curled effort rattles off the bar, but Hey was on hand to mop up and grab his second of the game. The half time whistle came at the right time for Wakefield, as Ponte were really beginning to assert their dominance.
The second half couldn’t have got off to a worse start for the visitors. The Wakefield ‘keeper tried to ‘take on’ Scott Smith, who wasn’t having any of it. He reacted and bundled the ball in to grab Pontefract’s fifth of the game.
Both Hey and Redford had chances to grab their hatricks and played key roles in most of our attacks.
The second half was much slower, as expected when both teams made changes to their starting XI.
With twenty minutes remainining, Gavin Rothery beat his marker to the ball. He was upended and the referee pointed to the spot, for the third time this evening. Rothery stepped up and powered into the roof of the net to make it six!
A dominant display from Ponte against our step 7 opponents. A good run out for both teams, Colls now face Goole this coming Saturday in what should be another good test.
