A perfect Bank Holiday Weekend ended in style as The Colls battered local rivals Ossett United in a score line that perhaps deserved to be larger than 4-0.
The Collieries came into this fixture on the back of a first win of the league campaign, where we won 0-1 away at Cleethorpes Town. This was our first points of the campaign and the confidence was building, whilst Ossett were on the back of a home defeat to Stockton.
The early exchanges of this West Yorkshire tussle saw both sides look to dominate, but there was little in the way of clear cut openings despite some nice build up play.
As the half progressed it was Pontefract who were looking the stronger, with 25 minutes on the clock it was our hosts that made the breakthrough. Jack Boyle found Connor Smythe breaking from midfield, he played a slide rule pass into Adam Haw down the channel and his perfectly weighted cross was turned in by Adam Priestley with aplomb.
One quickly became two, with a throw in from the right side by Elliot Owen to Jack Boyle – he turned away from his man and fired at goal – his shot crept under the despairing grasp of the ‘keeper to the amazement of most inside the ground. 2-0 Colls!
With less than ten minute since the opener went in, Ponte grabbed their third of the afternoon. A corner from the right by Jack Boyle was well planned out, as Adam Haw snuck around to the penalty spot to despatch first time to make it 3-nil.
It could have been four or five before the break if it wasn’t for the Ossett stopper looking to make amends for his earlier howler, he had to work smartly to deny Priestley adding to his tally.
Ossett made a double change at the break and started much better in the second half looking to break at pace. But in truth created very little to worry Lloyd Allinson and his back four, who were looking to bag their second clean sheet in as many days.
Chances came and went for Ponte as they pushed for a fourth, Priestley again in the thick of things as he first curled over after tidy build up play. He then rattled the woodwork, when a well struck volley had the ‘keeper done for.
Then with less than a quarter of an hour remaining Pontefract did get their fourth and the games final goal of the game. Connor Smythe with the corner from the right, Adam Haw met it at the near post and that man again Adam Priestley was ‘Adam’ on the spot to glance in from close range.
An outstanding performance from the WF8 side, who looked to have gained real confidence from both games this weekend. Adam Priestley bagging three times and a brace Man of the Match awards for his efforts this weekend, when he will admit a number of his colleagues could have scooped the prizes too.
Now Colls travel to Belper Town in the league, a side who currently sit second with just one defeat from their opening five games.
